When travelers think about exploring Kigali, many imagine private cars, guided walks, or short museum visits. But what if the best way to experience Rwanda’s capital is actually from the back of a motorbike?
Recently, I guided four travelers on a Kigali City Tour by Motorbike, and what began as a simple city exploration turned into one of the most immersive and memorable experiences I have ever hosted.
Unlike traditional city tours, a motorbike allows visitors to experience Kigali more intimately — stopping spontaneously, interacting with locals, feeling the rhythm of the city, and discovering places in ways a car simply cannot offer.
If you are looking for a more affordable, flexible, and authentic Kigali city experience, this may be the perfect adventure for you.
Why Explore Kigali by Motorbike?
Kigali is one of Africa’s cleanest, safest, and most organized cities. However, its hills, neighborhoods, markets, and hidden corners are best appreciated when you are fully immersed in the environment.
A motorbike city tour offers:
Better city views from both sides of the road
✅ Easy spontaneous stops for photos or local experiences
✅ Faster movement through Kigali traffic
✅ More interaction with local communities
✅ A more affordable alternative to private car tours
✅ A truly local experience
Most Kigali city tours by car cost around $100 per person, while walking tours average $70 per person. Our motorbike city tour experience cost only $60 per person, making it one of the best-value experiences in Kigali.
But the biggest difference is not the price — it is the feeling of freedom.
You do not simply observe Kigali.
You experience it.
Stop 1: Early Morning Energy at Kimironko Market
Kimironko Market
Our journey began early in the morning from the Centric Hotel.
Since the Kigali Genocide Memorial opens at 9:00 AM, we decided to start the day at Kimironko Market — and it turned out to be the perfect decision.
The market was already alive.
Women carrying baskets of fresh produce.
Motorbikes arriving with vegetables.
Vendors arranging colorful fruits.
Fresh food deliveries happening everywhere.
The atmosphere was energetic, loud, authentic, and beautifully chaotic in the best possible way.
This is where Kigali wakes up.
For visitors who want to experience local life beyond tourist attractions, Kimironko Market offers something truly special: the real rhythm of Rwanda.
We even stopped for a bit of shopping, giving the guests time to interact with local traders and experience daily life firsthand.
Starting a Kigali city tour here in the morning is something I highly recommend.
Stop 2: Learning Rwanda’s History at Kigali Genocide Memorial
Kigali Genocide Memorial
By around 9:00 AM, we headed to the memorial.
This is one of the most important places to visit in Kigali, especially for travelers wanting to understand Rwanda’s journey of resilience, healing, and transformation.
The memorial provides powerful insights into the history of the 1994 Genocide against the Tutsi, while also showing how Rwanda rebuilt itself into one of Africa’s fastest-growing and safest countries.
It is an emotional experience, but an important one.
For many travelers, this becomes one of the most meaningful moments of their visit to Rwanda.
Stop 3: The Campaign Against Genocide Museum
Campaign Against Genocide Museum
After the memorial, we continued to the Campaign Against Genocide Museum located near Rwanda’s Parliament.
This museum gives visitors deeper insight into how Rwanda was liberated and the strategy used by the approximately 600 soldiers who played a key role during that difficult period.
For travelers interested in history, leadership, and Rwanda’s transformation story, this museum adds a valuable perspective to the Kigali experience.
Stop 4: Traditional Lunch in Clay Pots at Erica Peka
Erica Peka
After a morning filled with learning and exploration, it was time for lunch.
We stopped in Kiyovu at Erica Peka, a restaurant known for serving authentic local food in traditional clay pots.
Instead of modern metal serving dishes, meals arrive in beautifully prepared clay pots, creating a uniquely Rwandan dining experience.
The guests absolutely loved it.
From local flavors to the presentation itself, it felt like culture served on a plate.
If you want to taste Rwanda beyond the usual restaurant experience, this stop is worth adding to your Kigali itinerary.
Stop 5: Walking Through Kigali’s Car-Free Zone
Kigali Car Free Zone
After lunch, we parked the bikes and explored downtown Kigali on foot.
The car-free zone in the city center is one of Kigali’s most enjoyable places to simply walk, observe, and connect with the city.
People chatting.
Friends meeting.
Street cafés buzzing.
Music in the background.
A relaxed urban energy.
We stopped at one of Kigali’s monuments for photos before continuing our journey.
Sometimes, the best travel memories come from simply slowing down and watching everyday life unfold.
Stop 6: Remembering History at the Belgian Peacekeepers Memorial
Belgian Peacekeepers Memorial
Our next stop was the Belgian Peacekeepers Memorial.
This historic site honors the Belgian soldiers who lost their lives during the tragic events of 1994.
For visitors wanting a deeper understanding of Rwanda’s history, this stop adds another important layer of context to the Kigali story.
Stop 7: Nyamirambo – Kigali’s Most Vibrant Neighborhood
Nyamirambo
No Kigali city tour feels complete without a visit to Nyamirambo.
Known for its colorful streets, local businesses, cultural diversity, and incredible street food, this neighborhood gives visitors a different side of Kigali.
We explored the lively area, watched locals enjoying food, and walked through the busy streets filled with movement and energy.
Nyamirambo feels alive.
It is one of those places where culture is not displayed for tourists it simply exists naturally.
And that is exactly what makes it beautiful.
Optional Add-On: Adventure at Mount Kigali
Mount Kigali
For travelers with extra time, there is an exciting optional extension to the tour.
At Mount Kigali, visitors can enjoy:
- Quad biking
- Horse riding
- Ziplining
- Scenic hill views over Kigali
This turns the city tour into a full-day Kigali adventure experience.
Why This Kigali Tour Feels Different
A motorbike city tour is not just transportation.
It changes the way you experience Kigali.
With a car, you watch the city through a window.
With a motorbike, you feel it.
You hear the sounds.
Smell the food.
Stop when something catches your eye.
Talk to local people.
Take spontaneous photos.
Discover moments that were never part of the original plan.
That flexibility is what made this experience unforgettable for our guests.
Tourism That Gives Back to Communities
At Safari & Truth, travel is not only about seeing beautiful places.
It is about impact.
Growing up in a rural community shaped my understanding of how tourism can transform lives. Through tourism, we can create opportunities, support education, and empower communities.
Part of this vision already exists through initiatives supported by Huza Gateway, including education and community-focused programs that benefit local people.
My hope is that tourism becomes more than sightseeing.
It becomes a bridge between travelers and communities.
A way to create memories while also creating impact.
